3 effects of food waste on the planet
Have you ever thought about the consequences of food waste? Like for example how much money we waste because of food waste, as well as a loss of freshwater. Think about this week and think about how much you wasted. How much was it? And how do you feel about it, maybe you think it does not affect you, but it affects all of us.
Did you know that food waste causes pollution? And a lot of it; food waste produces methane, which is a more powerful greenhouse gas than even CO2; causing global warming and climate change. Less wasted food means we release less methane gas, which is much better for the environment.
Second of all, food waste harms biodiversity. To produce more food, we need more land and to get lands people use deforestation, and it destroys trees, which help us breathe, as well as ecosystems, so where animals live. Sometimes it even causes animals' extinction.
But most importantly, the volume of water used in agricultural food production is immense. Therefore, if 30 percent of all the food produced goes to waste, then it means that more than 30 percent of freshwater used in the production and processing of food also goes to waste. This contributes to blue water footprint which refers to the amount of consumed surface and groundwater resources that goes to waste. And wasting this much freshwater because of food waste is a real issue, because freshwater is precious.
As a conclusion, people are suffering from hunger while some people think that they can just throw anything because they were not careful with dates or because it is not good enough. Imagine if we made some efforts, it would be a big step for the humanity. No hunger, less freshwater wasted unnecessarily, and a great economic benefit. So waste less and act more, for everyone's sake.
