Ways to Prevent Food Waste by Fabiana

Do you know that In the EU each year people wasted around 88 million tonnes of food with associated costs estimated at 143 billion euros?  And that a European or North American consumer wastes almost 100 kilograms of food annually, which is more than his or her weight (70 kilograms)? This is very bad for the world and for the environment because the food wasted in Europe alone could feed 200 million hungry people. We can stop food waste on the planet by doing these things at home: use leftovers, give food to the poor, and eat smaller portions.

First, we can reuse the leftovers like for example if you cook pasta and there is left over you can use them and do a macaroni omelette or something else. It is actually good because like this you don't waste food.

Next, instead of throwing away food you can give it to the poor. Many of the people that are poor have no food and are homeless. Poor people do not only live in Africa, but also in your own town. So, instead of throwing food you can give it to some organizations that are in your city or also some churches near your house.

Finally, one of the causes of food waste is the term “best before” that means that you can eat the food after this date but it wouldn't be so good, and the term “use by” means that you can eat the food only till that day, not after, and what happens is that the people confused the “best before” with the “use by” so they throw the food thinking that is not good enough to eat.  If you understand these terms you will waste less food.

In conclusion, food waste is a serious problem, but you can help solve it by doing these thress easy things.
