3 Ways to stop food waste

Did you know that in Europe around 88 millions of tons of food are wasted each year? But there are easy ways for you to reduce food waste at home. Some of them are: check and make the difference between the “use by” date and the “best before” date on food,  turn your leftovers into garden food, and use up your leftovers.

One way to reduce food waste is to check the “use by” and “best before” dates and to know what they mean. The “use by” date means that you have to eat this product before the date written else it could make you sick. Checking this date will allow you to know that you have to eat this food in priority. The “best before” date means that after this date the food may not be at its best quality. If you check this date you know that it would be better if you ate it before the date but it’s not an obligation. Knowing what these dates mean will avoid you from throwing away something that has crossed its “best before” date or from wasting food you should have eaten long ago.

Another way you can reduce food waste at home is to turn your leftovers into garden food. This is something you cannot really do if you live in the city but if you live in the countryside it is a really good alternative. This really good to do because you use wasted food either to create more food or to feed trees or flowers. Like that no food is really wasted.

The last and most important way you can reduce food waste is to use up your leftovers. This is the simplest and most efficient way you can reduce the amount of food you waste, and everybody can do it. After you finish a meal, if there is food left put it in a box and then put that box in the fridge. You can use that food during the weekend when you don’t know what to cook  and you have many leftovers in your fridge or you can use them for a lunch box or you can just eat them if you’re still hungry after a meal. There are many ways you can use up your leftovers so don’t throw them away.

There are many ways you can reduce food waste and most of them are very easy. The 3 ways I explained earlier are only a tiny part of what you can do. Doing this also saves a lot of money and protects the environment, as throwing away food that cannot be recycled harms the environment.
